Me vs The Universe
October 2nd 2007 13:44
This universe is hardly good enough. In fact, it sucks. You may be wondering why I am thinking this. I suppose it would only be fair to tell everyone why recently the universe has angered me.
Putt-putt Golf.
Yes, the miniature simulation of one of the world's most infuriating past times has managed to draw my ire and earn my wrath. You may ask why. I'll certainly tell you. The physics of this universe have conspired to betray my attempts to put a brightly coloured sphere into a small hole. Honestly, the ability I have to bounce ball in and then out of that same hole borders on the mystical. I think I am the world's most talented golfer in that exact and particular sense. Unfortunately, this ability has earned me absolutely no amount of money or any kind of sponsorship deals with any sporting goods company. Sucks, but hey, them's the brakes.
But this did get me thinking about a few things. One is that I really don't think that this universe is good enough. Honestly, I do think it's great, but there is always something lacking. I thought about this longer and it struck me that I am hardly alone in this. Linkin Park certainly understand this, as does every other musician or poet that ever picked up a pen and wrote something from their soul that burned a mark inside of us that we never really forgot. Karl Barth is also agreeing with me, as do most other theologians that I have ever read when it comes to this kind of topic.
I love being alive, I love sunshine and wind. I love a good meal with those I love. I love the times when the world seems to move absolutely perfectly in tune, when that ultimately perfect moment just happens without any kind of planning or forethought. When everything sounds just goes "click" and falls into place. I love these moments, as rare as they are, but they only serve to remind me of something.
Life can never truly be amazing enough. All these glorious things only point to something more amazing than I can comprehend.
