Parochialism is Brain Poison
November 19th 2007 13:24
I share a few traits with my father, one of them being that neither he or I can stand things being dull. This is not saying that a thing needs to be entertaining in order to be good quality. But I believe that dullness shows a lack of creativity, care, intellect and original thought.
The blatant dullness of christian entertainment is probably the best case in point that I can think of. The most local example I can think of is the so called "breakfast entertainment" of 103.2 Heart FM. In fact, the whole bloody radio channel succeeds in being a cavalcade of dullness and a lack of thought due to a far too large dose of being parochial. Don't get me wrong, the small pleasures in life are exceptionally worthwhile. A good meal, good company and good conversation remain in my top ten of contents required for a good evening.
But I digress.
The main thing about parochialism that offends me is that it has been designed and developed to offend no one. Humour, religion, politics and sex (the most interesting things about being human) are extremely offensive and they ought to be.
Chesterton once remarked that the funniest jokes are about the most serious things. Getting married, and getting hung. Religion is offensive by requirement. Christianity (which I suppose I am allowed to say this about) is at best one of the top ten most offensive religions that I know about. And so it should be. I won't go into the details of my current sex life, but suffice to say you don't want to know about it.
Small thinking leads to small living. Not every life is supposed to be a Hollywood success story, but all of them are interesting. That being said, a good story is one of the best things about being alive.

How's that for a safe, tame statement. Let's try that again, shall we?
"Christianity is the most offensive religion in the whole fucking world."
There. That's better.

A Simple Christian
as always your summary is eloquent, non-hostile and considerate of everyone's sensitivities.
But I don't think you've told me ALL of what you feel......Don't hold back dude.
