The Spiritual Truth I Learned Today While Cleaning a Toilet
November 10th 2006 11:55
So, I guess the title leaves me with quite a bit of explaining to do.
I was cleaning my toilet today (I share this bathroom with two of my younger brothers) which in itself isn't remarkable, but the state of the toilet was. It was filthy. I do not mean ordinary filthy, I mean absolutely disgusting filthy. I ended up scrubbing it for twenty minutes and there is still mould or whatever it is in the bowl part near the bottom. The reason it got this bad is pretty simple. The light bulb in that toilet is broken. I don't mean we have a light bulb in the U-bend (heh, heh) I mean that the bulb in that room has blown. For the third time this year. It has been like this for quite some time so we very rarely use this bathroom. I mean's it's okay for the occasional pee in when I am in a hurry, but not for the more serious business where I need to see what I am doing. I also like to read on the toilet which is impossible because there is pretty well no natural light that gets in there. But the cumulative effects of what happens in there became obvious when I could actually SEE in there.
Which is a pretty good lesson to learn. IF we don't actually take the time to look at things, we'll never see anything, especially the things we really need to. If we notice a friend of ours has been absent from our life for a little too long, we should call them, see how they are. If we notice that the relationship we have with our significant other is starting to get slow, do something amazing for them out of nowhere. Neglect is a slow killer, almost like a disease. It is, however, very easy to cure in the early stages.
Speaking of disease, leprosy is very similar. The funny thing about leprosy is that it is not fungal. It doesn't eat away at muscle or human flesh, causing the body to fall apart. What it does do is remove feeling from an area, causing the person suffering from leprosy to not realise the damage that is being done to them. A small cut can turn septic and cause great damage completely unnoticed because the person didn't feel it. An eye can dry out, get infected and become a useless and sightless orb because the body can't feel that the eye needs to be moistened at regular intervals and so does nothing.
Think about it for awhile.
As a christian I need to be keeping an eye on things in my life. For example, tonight I sat down and had coffee and dinner with a friend I haven't done this with in ages. Neal, who is quite often a voice of sanity and wisdom in my life. There aren't many people you'll ever meet that can match your sense of humour, your mind, your perceptions and alot of other things. So when you DO find someone like that, get into their life and make sure they stay in yours. I would also like to say that if I am not always thinking about new ways in which I can encourage my girlfriend, tell her I love her, write her poems and be a blessing in her life then my relationship with her will weaken. I love her far too much to let that happen. If I am not loving God more every day, seeking Him, praying, reading my Bible, listening to what He says in whatever way He says it I am not developing myself as a follower of Christ and a lover of God. And I love God and I love Jesus far too much for that.
